Fluminense beat Vasco in the final four days after Deivid missed one of the most incredible goals I’ve ever seen.
Guanabara Cup final: Vasco 1 Fluminense 3 (Sunday 26 Feb)
Flu were lucky not to be behind after Diego Souza hit the post and Nilton went close with a header. But once Fred opened the scoring – from the penalty spot after tricky youngster Wellington Nem was upended – there was only ever one winner. Deco (yes, that’s Deco, ex-Barça) added a second with a great goal before Fred made it three. Vasco managed to pull one goal back though after the threw defender Dedé up front. I’ve never seen that in Brazil before. Flu good value for their win and looking in good shape!
It’s worth mentioning Wellington Nem, Fluminense’s exciting 20 year old forward. He won the penalty after a good dribble and could have had a goal himself after a brilliant run (near the beginning of the highlights below). Bag of tricks in his locker. Remember the name!
Guanabara Cup semi final: Incredible Deivid miss (22 Feb)
One day after carnival, Vasco and Flamengo went head to head in the Guanabara Cup semi final. Ronaldinho may not have been pleased with the timing but it was Deivid who had a night to forget: he missed one of the most incredible goals I’ve ever seen! Absolutely awful. To compound his misery the miss came with the scores tied at 1-1. Flamengo lost 2-1.
But, fair play to Deivid. Despite being widely ridiculed, the player has spoken to the media and taken responsibility for Flamengo’s elimination. Not many players would take interviews after a miss like that.
Great commentary. And what a great atmosphere at the game too.
